New features will come soon to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia on the Internet: they are mostly small graphical touches that will increase usability and ease of changing items on the site.

In the month of April – the Wikimedia Foundation’s blog says – will make their appearance several innovations:

  • a new style, called Vector, which will make it easier to find the essential functions of the editor pages and therefore making them easier to change, thanks to a new toolbar that allow you to insert links and tables
  • simplification of the interface of the site, by repositioning the search bar, and eliminating certain old features that became obsolete over time, with an eye to accessibility

All things that for the eyes of many might appear obvious, but they aren’t. Editing articles of Wikipedia, in fact, is not as easy as you may think.

To make detailed changes, you need to know the markup of MediaWiki, the software that runs Wikipedia and several other wiki sites in the world. Although it is not anything complicated, for novice users can be an obstacle that would prevent so many to work on the content of the free encyclopedia.
